Derm Shield Aftercare

Supplies

Soap

Select an unscented, antibacterial hand soap, such as Dial Gold. Bar soaps and soaps with dyes and scents will cause dryness and discomfort.

Lotion

Choose an unscented white lotion such as Aveeno or Lubriderm. Organic alternatives such as coconut oil, CBD salves, and shea-based butters are also acceptable.

Paper Towels

Clean single-use paper towels of any brand will do. Do not use reusable towels of any kind, as they will leave lint and debris in and around your tattoo.

About Derm Shield

Derm Shield is the brand of adhesive aftercare bandage we use at our studio - you may be familiar with other brands like Tegaderm, Saniderm, and SecondSkin.

Adhesive bandages are waterproof, sterile wraps that protect your tattoo from exposure and infection. They should be left on for a maximum of 72 hours after receiving your tattoo, during which fluid will accumulate beneath the bandage. With the adhesive bandage on, you can shower and dress as normal, and otherwise completely ignore your tattoo.

In the event that your bandage ruptures or leaks, remove it immediately.

Removal Instructions

  1. Gather necessary supplies within reach before beginning. Wash your hands with warm water and soap before handling your tattoo.
  2. Run warm water over the wrap and allow it to soak for several minutes. This is most easily done in the shower, but could also be done in a tub or sink.
  3. Pull the skin around your tattoo tightly in one direction, then gently peel the edge of the wrap away from your tattoo in the opposite direction. Allow water to run over your tattoo while continuing to remove the wrap slowly.
  4. Thoroughly wash your tattoo with warm water and soap. Do not use anything abrasive, like a towel or loofah, as this can irritate your tattoo. Pat dry with a paper towel and apply lotion to the area. Do not re-wrap or bandage your tattoo.
  5. Repeat step 4 three to five times a day for the following two weeks until your tattoo feels like normal skin again.

Remember...

A tattoo is an open wound and should be treated as such. Refrain from touching the area with dirty hands and do not let others touch your tattoo.  Do not allow your tattoo into contact with unclean surfaces. Do not scratch or pick at your tattoo.

Avoid UV exposure to your tattoo while it is healing; once fully healed, we recommend applying sunscreen whenever the area is exposed to maintain the brightness and clarity of your piece.

Do not submerge your tattoo in standing water of any kind for a minimum of two weeks. We especially recommend avoiding any chemically-treated water, like chlorine pools or hot tubs, until the tattoo is completely healed.
